Floating plants are great for giving fish in the aquarium a sense of security and safety by shading them from the lights in the aquarium or in used in a pond covering the fish from the sun, as well as airborne predators. These plants will also sometimes be nibbled on by certain fish, good for the fish, but not particularly good for the plants since the roots of the plant are often destroyed. Duckweed reproduces very quickly and spreads out across the surface of an aquarium or pond, so it must often have handfuls removed to help clear the pond surface.
